Killing Myself in the Gym – But NOT LOSING ANY WEIGHT!

Ummmmm, can ANYONE help me to understand why I am literally killing myself, going to the gym 6-7 days a week at 5:30 am, working out on cardio machines (treadmill, elliptical, glider, bike) for an hour, burning approximately 600 -1000 calories and I am not losing ANY weight!

I am so determined….. BUT would like to see some results!

You might ask: Well, Yani, what are you eating – I am eating 1200 calories per day that I track in MyFitnessPal. So I cannot say that I eat perfect or “clean” but I do the best I can with mostly salads and proteins.

Ok, let me back up, I began my fitness journey 4 years ago by joining Weight Watchers and I lost 60 lbs on that plan (I did not buy their food but I was counting “points”). Along with WW I was exercising 3 times a week doing a WW aerobics DVD.

After WW, I had maintained that loss for 3 and a half years and then slowly I began gaining weight so I put my current plan into action. I joined Planet Fitness Gym on September 2, 2014. Since that time I have been working out regularly  (as stated in the opening paragraph). I work out at PF, track my food,  and I even invested in a FitBit!

I even use my FitBit to track my steps!
I even use my FitBit to track my steps!

Can someone, anyone, tell me what in the world I am doing wrong? I do not mind being a curvy girl but if I am putting in the time at the gym, can a sista see SOME results?

My goal is to lose another 60 lbs!

Does anyone have any tips, advice, or help for me – PLEASE!!!!

  1. If you’re working out & eating right, but not losing weight, you may want to consult your doctor to have your thyroid checked. It’s not a big thing, it just may need to be regulated, which can be done w/the proper diet.

  2. I understand your frustration. i am on what i call my #CurvesDefined journey. are you doing just cardio? perhaps you need to mix it up with weights and classes. they will help break any monotony you might feel and keep your body from getting used to doing the same thing.

    1. I totally agree. I have just begun using the weight machines and I will begin taking classes soon. I thought cardio was the best way to lose, though… sigh. I think you are right, I need to trick my body and shock it into losing this weight!

  3. Hi! I went through this same exact thing but slightly different. I was seeing weight lost (I used MYFITNESSPAL and MAPMYRUN) but at some point, I was maintaining the current weight. I was given advice by a guy friend who works out a lot and has lost weight and builds muscle. You may want to switch up your workout regimen. Maybe start a Zumba class, start running/jogging, etc…new atmosphere (running outside)…this way you get your body out of the same routine that it’s used to. I was told that it happens often and you have to break out of certain workout cycles so your body doesn’t get used to that. I fell off my wagon while writing my novel but I’m about to get back on it! Good luck on your weight lost journey 🙂

    1. Thank you. You are absolutely correct. I will be going to see a nutritionist soon, I have started using the weight machines focusing on my abs. I am not sure what the rest/recovery periods are supposed to be. Do you have any advice for me about that?

  4. Did you do anything that would have affected your hormones? Go on or off birth control…etc? When I went off birth control, I put on 50 pounds in a year and half time even though I wasn’t overeating and I was working out and I went through exactly what you’re going through now. I was running all the time, restricting calories and even tried to become temporarily anerexic (this just gave me migraines and I still didn’t lose weight. I don’t recommend this.)I had had a major surgery that at first I thought had affected my metabolism, but it turned out I had PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome) and because I had been on birth control so long (which is a form of treatment for PCOS), it had altered my hormones and body chemistry. Needless to say, I am back on birth control and finally losing weight again. (Metformin is another treatment for PCOS if you’re trying to conceive or can’t be on birth control) It just sucks having to start all over again. Who would have thought going OFF birth control would make me gain weight. Usually it’s the opposite. It was a year and a half of hell and I thought I was headed for obesity and there was nothing I could do. It sucks having to start all over again when I had worked so hard previously to get skinny, but at least I have the ability to lose weight again now. I hope this helps other women out there. It took me forever to figure out. Don’t stop trying. Get the answers you need. I would get your hormones checked if its not your thyroid and I also agree with changing up your exercises too. Good luck to you!! 🙂

    1. Wow! This is very interesting information. When this was going on I had gotten off BC. But it’s funny that this comment come now because about 3 months ago I stopped taking Depo. And in place of that I had the eblation procedure done (which has also stopped my period). The reason I got on Depo was to stop my periods because they were so severe.
But now I have gained 11 pounds and I feel horrible about it. So now back to the doc I go to have my hormones checked! Thank you for this wonderful advice!
